The Covid-19 pandemic for many, brought into focus the things we depend on and need most. Beyond the obvious such as food, water, shelter and clothing, our connection with others is essential for our emotional, psychological and physical well being. It is these bonds that give our lives definition and meaning.
If asked who helped sustain us throughout the pandemic, the answer was frequently not just family, friends or lovers, it was our non-human animal companions; our pets. In the fall of 2020, I put a call out on social media for people who would like to have their portrait taken with an animal friend that was vital for their well-being through the pandemic. The response was overwhelming.
For me, the act of photographing the tender connections between people and their pets is a reclamation of what really matters.
This project champions the heart and the hope that we remember our humble place within the web of life on our planet, for humans and non-humans alike.
